It says it can be used to replace old struts. Yes, with one caveat. It seems that the optical sensor in the old mounting system is a different size than the current optical sensor. But they don't have the right mount for the old optical sensor. You can plug it in, flex the plastic and it will hold. But if you advertise that it "can be used as a replacement for older bracket mounting systems," you'll need to add a holder to make it fully backwards compatible. However, once you insert the sensor, it works great. That's why I only deducted one star.
