Small, cute, but moldy?

I bought the rectangular version of this bag. Although the bag is generally attractive, there are a few green stains on its wood. I was ready to accept the stains, but the green (mold?) seemed to be spreading. Unfortunately I returned it and got my money back. The bag isn't the most practical and can't hold that many things, which is why I bought it. Based on other positive review photos, I think I may have just received a defective product.
