I used an adjustable hole saw to cut 1 15/16 holes in half shift boat hatches. To attach it securely I cut 3/4" washers to match the latch body and then cut the bolts to the correct length to hold the washers to the back of the hatch. With a little creativity, these bars went deep. Sufficient for installation in doors up to 3/4 inch thick.
