Review on πŸ”Œ GLOTRENDS 2-Bay M.2 SSD to USB C Adapter Enclosure for NVME SSD (Key M) and SATA SSD (Key B/B+M), Stylish Black Aluminum Case (Pisces) by Adam Madden

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Really good near perfect NVMe SSD enclosure

I'm still learning the nuances of NVMe SSDs and the variety of cards and enclosures available, but I've bought 4 GLOTRENDS Scorpio and 4 2-bay Pisces Guards. I use Samsung 970 EVO PCIe (2TB) and Samsung 970 EVO Plus PCIe (1TB) cards. What I really need is a dual chassis that is bus powered, supports RAID, and can be loaded with a couple of 2TB cards. for 4TB of shared storage. Although the Pisces model allows for 2 cards, I should have read the description more carefully. One card must be M.2 PCIe and the other M.2 SATA. So you have 1 fast card (SATA) and another one that is 4x faster (PCIe). However, the Scorpio and Pisces components can be combined. Long story short, I took the Pisces case, replaced the M.2 SATA adapter with the Scorpio M.2 PCIe adapter, and used SoftRAID to create a 4TB RAID 0 partition with excellent speed test results. The only downside is that I have to use 2 Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports to mount the volume. GLOTRENDS: This is a winning product, I would give 5 stars. Do it without tools, support 2x2TB cards with RAID and one computer port. Speed test results are attached. Your mileage will vary, but I see a logical increase in speed based on the technology tested. I'm using a 2017 Macbook Pro laptop with Mojave 10.14.4 and connect to a Thunderbolt 3 port with a TB3 cable and nothing else on the bus. I just don't understand how this is possible with scorpion or fish enclosures. They mount to my UBS bus, not Thunderbolt, which is limited to 10Gb/s (1300MB/s) in USB 3.1 Gen 2. I might be missing something obvious, but these speeds are only achieved with cases equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port, not USB-C. The ThunderBlade drives I've tested that use Thunderbolt support it.
