Review on Herm Sprenger Heavyweight Collar Stainless by Alyssa Bell

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great quality!: Collars

My dog has a 15 inch neck where he should wear a collar so this one was huge on him with all the links. Why didn't I measure? I do not know. The good news is you can take out links so I warned about the large size as I wasn't sure. I give it 5 stars because this spiked collar is of excellent quality and finish. However, in hindsight I don't think I would have gotten this one for the following reasons: I have a large dog (mastiff mix) and since the limbs were removed to get the correct measurements he is also close to being small and oversized. The links are too big for a perfect fit. So in hindsight I would go for at least a medium link size if not a small even though he is a large dog to fit better. Little did I know that when I got this as a solution to a dog not pulling on a walk, this spiked collar stopped the dog from pulling 90% of the time, but it's not like she doesn't want it if she does not having on, she will still return to gradual traction. It's a constant struggle to remind the dog to follow him. The collar causes some problems with aggression as the dog becomes controllable after a correction and sometimes instinctively tries to gasp when corrected. I'll try a different collar that takes away from the dog's attraction instead of provoking it. I have a friend who thinks these collars are inhuman. Be aware of what the spiked collar does and doesn't do, what it does and doesn't do, so you can let them know when people try to badmouth your training methods. When using this collar, you may hear a lot of "shoulds" and "shouldn'ts". Third, consider a spare collar. I've never had a problem with this collar coming off, but some people do and then you could be in a very bad situation. This company (Leerburg) offers a good solution for a replacement collar and leash to be used with a prong. Collar and reserve collar together. I will try the replacement collar they make in place of the spiked collar. The problem with the prong is that you only use it for walks, you need another collar for your dog tag. This other collar can be left on all the time AND it can be used for correction AND it reduces arousal in dogs.
