I purchased these filters as part of a project to build a home made water purification system using filters, two (2) 5 gallon food pails with lids. Fridge faucet kit and drill with 3/4" and 7/16" bits. While the filters were soaking according to the package directions, I built the base for the water treatment system and installed it inside. I ran a full 5 gallons of standard tap water through the system to complete the cleaning and any leftover charcoal residue from inside the filters and they performed to manufacturer's specs. Whether you're looking for a replacement for your standard Berkey filters (which can cost upwards of $100 a pair) or building a system yourself, they seem like an inexpensive alternative to either option.
