I have not used it for selfies but I have used it for product/macro photography with my phone. I have a ring flash for my DSLR, but sometimes it's easier to just pull the phone out. Ring lights, along with a light awning, distribute light evenly, eliminating harsh shadows. I believe if used for selfies they will have ring flares like ring flares. Remember this is like a "hot light" i.e. H. It's an ambient light (LCD screen) and not a cold light or flash, so you may need to add more lights if you want to shoot with a smaller aperture.
