Revainrating 5 out of 5

Meets my needs

This product meets my expectations with just a few small imperfections that prevent it from getting a 5 star rating. After reading the reviews, I carefully went through the user manual before even attempting to plug it in. Even with all the detailed connection examples, my special case was not included, but that was not a problem. I'm used to connections that even "experts" say are impossible but work. It was easy for me and it works. The quality of the dubbing up to 3 hours promised me. To my (admittedly undemanding) eye and ear, DVD quality is the same as VHS. That makes me happy. Two glitches come into play here: 1) It is EXTREMELY tricky to insert a VHS tape. It doesn't always work on the first try. It took at least 10 tries for a tape before it went in enough to close the door. Otherwise, all you can do is wait until he realizes he has a problem and spit the tape at you to try again. Some tapes work well the first time, but others don't seem to like it. 2) It is sensitive to detect copyright protection and it may take too long to verify! If there's a real copyrighted tape it's trying to overwrite, it intercepts it for 10 seconds and stops recording. It's good! However, if he continuously reproduces the same thing for more than an hour, he should not still seek copyright protection. I would recommend that the process finish checking for copyright protection 5-10 minutes after an overwrite session. Any tape failure after this point is just a little bit of damage on the old tape. Twice he suddenly stopped the recording and told me that it was copyrighted an hour or 1.5 hours after the recording started. At this stage it's just a bad spot on the tape! I was able to continue by creating a second "headline" that skipped a second or two where it left off. The result was usable, but it shouldn't have happened. In general - it does what I need. It's not fast, but it seems to work great. The manual could have been written better and the definition of "Remove Header" could have been described better!
