Let's start with the disadvantages, because there is only one of them: these are river stones. You can get them for free. PROS: - Nice addition to my aquarium - Fish love them - They cover my airstones without impeding flow - Very easy to clean A few notes: The standard rule of 1 lb per gallon -> 1 lb of substrate per gallon of water applies ( 10 gallon aquarium = 10 pounds of substrate). There are several ways to clean the substrate - boiling, baking, or (like I did because they are large) the hand tumbling method: place enough rocks at the bottom of the container to form a layer , add enough hot water to cover them, Close the lid and invert for about 30 seconds, drain the water and repeat the process once. Add vinegar (I use about 1/4 cent per gallon) and soak. Then flush, drain, refill and add a dechlorinator in the same way. Then put in a tank. Sounds like a lot, but the whole bag will take less than an hour of work.
