I also have a tried and tested Sony WH-1000 mk3, and a limited edition Skull Candy Crusher 360 without noise reduction, and famous Audio Technica ATX-M50X studio monitors. I also had at least 6 other headphones from Sennheiser, B&W etc (yes I collect audio gear). I fly very often with American Airlines and from time to time I get an upgrade to their Business Class Transcon A322T where AA passes on a Bose Quiet Comfort 35 for use. So in one flight I brought in the 4 pairs of cans I mentioned above and did a 5-sided, straight, back-to-back, instant comparison (volume adjusted). While Sony won the title for most effective noise cancellation, followed by Bose, these AKGs topped everyone for exceptional, I mean exceptional sound quality. The mids and especially the highs (8kHz to 12kHz) are so wide and clear that they literally make Sony and Boss sound muffled (and I have exceptional hearing for my age, which is confirmed by annual ENT hearing tests). Bass is also very extended and powerful (well below 40Hz) without the chaotic bloat of Sony, Bose and Skull Candy, which place too much emphasis on the 80-120Hz frequency range. And they don't have that pesky mid-dip that hallowed Bose dip. Bose has absolutely the worst sound compared to any other brand I've tried. Noise-cancellation is still excellent, sitting third behind Sony and Bose. The app also features a parametric equalizer with infinitely variable center frequencies and semi-variable bandwidth, or Q! You can even create a shelf equalizer! PARAMETRIC EQ! The Sony app only offers a very crude 5 band graphic EQ with the lowest bass frequency fixed at 100Hz with a very wide and imprecise fixed bandwidth or Q. 100Hz is a very dirty, nasty and boomy frequency. It's not "deep" bass. I've provided screenshots of the parametric equalizer in action. These AKGs are amazing. If sound quality is your priority, no other noise-cancelling brand can currently match AKG. AKG has become a legendary manufacturer of professional recording and studio headphones and microphones for a reason. star sounds!
