The dimming you get is a minimum of 1 step and a maximum of 3 steps in front of a giant purple 'X' appears in the entire field of view. Also, even at the minimum setting, these are polarizers. and worse, you have to unscrew the filter a bit to adjust the polarization effect. Polarization smoothes out human faces, which look much brighter with a bit of shine. And if you adjust them while shooting, you're likely to shake the camera a bit unless it's mounted on a tripod etc. These problems are not unique to this Vari-ND brand, they affect them all, no matter the price. . This one is pretty well built and affordable. DSLR enthusiasts look to Vari-ND as saviors who are tired of making excuses for their hybrid cameras not having ND filters, but that's a false god. You have to transition smoothly from 1 to 3 stops of exposure reduction without affecting aperture or ISO, don't worry about the polarized look, don't overshoot (it doesn't have hard stops), and support the camera well enough to do the fade without shaking. Plausible, but don't spend more than that on it.
