Review on Sennheiser MKH416-P48U3: Professional Super-Cardioid Shotgun Tube Condenser Microphone by Daniel Pesicek

I changed my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars after hearing the review multiple times. The extra bass sounds better after you listen a little. I could EQ the AT-8035, but I'll keep the 416 and use that. Much more expensive but as I've been listening more the mic has a richness that really enhances the sound. My review below was BEFORE I decided to leave the mic. I received this mic in a few days and just tested it. I use a gun mic to record episodes with Coach Bronner. The 416 is a great mic BUT {and the important info always comes after the BUT in most situations} I have an Audio Technica AT8035 which is the original mic I used and when IA/B put them both in I could don't tell the difference! The 416 seemed a bit more bass-heavy, but the 8035 seemed clearer with a little less bass. They really were so close that it's hard to tell the difference, and even when you can tell the difference, it's hard to choose one over the other. The big problem is that the AT 8035 costs $270 and the 416 costs $1,000. You can buy almost four 8035s for the price of one 416 and I just don't see the difference. They both look the same, have the same dimensions and body design. I'm returning the 416 and buying another 8035. Maybe the 416 has other benefits that I just haven't heard of or tested in my area. The 416 may have better off-axis noise reduction, but if you're recording in a studio (me) and want a pistol mic to pick up an object a few feet away, the 8035 is great and virtually indistinguishable from the MKH416. I've attached a test video file from Sennheiser and Audio Technica microphones. The first test is an expensive $1,000 Sennheiser MKH416-P48U3. The second microphone we tested is the Audio Technica AT-8035, which currently costs $269. I called it the original mic because I couldn't remember the model number (or brand) when recording the video. I was really just testing it for myself and didn't think of posting it on Revain. I'm about two feet from the microphones. You will be the judge.
