It automatically connects to a paired device (in this case my smartphone) and if you have a music player that automatically plays music from that location plays Pick up where you left off then save yourself the hassle of opening the music player It's great for indoor use (loud volume for a small group of friends drinking at a table) and acceptable for outdoor use ( You can hear him during a bbq, but not as well as indoors). All in all this is a great speaker. And considering the price, this is a great portable BT speaker.
