Review on Dell S2317HJ Wireless Charging Monitor - 1080P, 1920x1080, 60Hz HD by Robert Cartwright

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great for graphics, annoying setting

My last Dell Revain monitor didn't impress me so I was happy to get a review on this one. It displays graphics nicely, although it has a few downsides. GRAPHICS: I don't play graphically realistic video games, but I do (static) graphic design. Rendering on this monitor is impressive. I only found one problem with haloing: when a fully saturated red fill is next to a fully saturated green fill, there is some yellow/black around the edge (recreated in Adobe Illustrator, MS Paint and several Corels). programs, with multiple monitor settings). Little problem. TEXT. The maximum resolution of this monitor is only 1920 x 1080, so you'll see some anti-aliasing at the smallest font size displayed at 100% scaling or less. I appreciate the portrait mode for the page layout. The monitor also has an "Easy Arrangement" feature that sets anchor areas on the screen - this makes it easy to place two pages of text next to each other, which is a very handy feature. the whiteboard menu to adjust obvious things like brightness and contrast as well as more complex things like anchor areas in the simple ordering function mentioned above. There is also a downloadable program "Dell Display Manager" that offers similar functionality. The built-in menu is accessed via a series of small gray dots in the lower right corner of the front panel. I love the buttons more and they don't have any tactile feedback at all, but that's a minor complaint. The power "button" is also a slightly softer piece of plastic. Luckily, there's a power indicator at the very bottom in case you weren't sure you pressed it hard enough. SETUP: Nothing is perfect, and the setup was a little disappointing in this case: on startup with all connections connected (I thought) the monitor complained that the DP cable was not connected. Hm? Well, you have to explicitly set the input via the onboard menu, and I connected through the HDMI port, not one of the DP ports. Oh. Spirit. The Ikea-esq quick start diagram only shows DP connections, nothing else that didn't help (DP cables are included as I already had a mini-HDMI-HDMI cable which I actually needed). All of this would have been easier if I had read the manual, but I couldn't install it from the CD that came with it as I didn't have a monitor connected. SKIP TO 10. (So many for plug and play) - Likewise, there's a USB port on the back, separate from the other ports. Great, that must make it easier to swap inputs on the fly. No, according to the quick start guide, you actually need to plug in the USB/micro USB cable that runs from the back of the screen to the base to power the Qi charger (good thing there's a cable, bad that there isn't now one gives an extra random cable behind the monitor). Note that you must adjust the monitor's power settings to power this port when the screen is in standby mode, otherwise the charger will only work when the screen is on. (After a bit of testing it turned out that all USB ports work the same regardless of location, so you can plug your Qi charger into one of the fewer available ports and use it for hot-swapping. However, there aren't any USB ports to get Power when the screen is off so you can't use this charger as a main charger unless you plug it into a real wall instead of the back of a screen). Third, the connectors for the various inputs are located at the bottom of a bulge on the back (thankfully the screen rotates so you can get the bottom part out of the way). These ports are identified with cast black letters on a black background. Yes, I can tell an HDMI port from a USB port just by looking. However, I cannot distinguish HDMI-1 from HDMI-2. So have a small flashlight ready when setting up. Fourth, you must explicitly specify the orientation of the monitor since there is no automatic detection. No problem if you don't change orientation often. (However, Windows 10 otherwise had no problems with the monitor). All in all, having got it working, this is a good monitor with some temporary ergonomic issues. ---------------- ------- NOTE. Along with the monitor, I also bought the Dell AC511 Wired USB Soundbar.
