Haven't tried suction cups but they do what I paid for at a great price. I just wish it came with instructions, I used the Amazon pictures to see where and how to put the pieces. Fits a little tight in the tube and I couldn't get it all the way in the tube. Turning the knobs is a little tight as I only need them to squeeze out a small amount of air as I use them in my sea monkey tank. Now I don't have to manually air it anymore, so I'm happy with that
