My laptop broke recently. It was the motherboard, not the hard drive, so I didn't lose any data. I also recently installed a new desktop system. The accident reminded me that I need a backup system. One that was quick and easy to use. I had an old version of the Startech external drive that I hardly used, but had no complaints either. However, I wanted a device that would make it easier to insert/remove the disc. Having one of their old units, I researched the Startech product line and found this unit. Installing/removing SATA 3.5" and 2.5" drives is very easy. There's even a side button that ejects the drives from the slots, but I tend to just eject them myself. It comes with fast USB 3.0 interfaces/cables (superspeed bandwidth of 10GB/s). If you don't have USB 3.0 ss ports yet, USB 2.0 also works, only the transfer speed is slower. To be honest, I only get over 800Mbps throughput with USB3.0 in SS mode, and the potential doesn't even come close to 10Gbps. I don't think this is Startech's fault. It's probably the software and/or the drive that is slowing down the overall speed. To save some money because I was installing a new desktop, I decided to order a cheaper non-solid non-hybrid 3.5" 500GB drive for backup. I use it with Macrium Reflect software which does disk imaging, compression and encryption. I mirror 2 internal drives on my desktop (one 1TB) and 1 internal drive on my laptop. With a 500GB external drive in Startech I can make at least 5 full image backups of all the drives before I have to delete the previous backup data. I paid $39 for Startech and see it's around $36 now. Easy. I can't be wrong The only mistake I made was that I didn't order him a hybrid drive. I will fix that in the future. For now it does what I need.
