For optimal performance, cut the wick immediately. Sometimes they are a bit rough and worn. You want the striker to only touch the wick so the copper wires don't accidentally interfere with the contact between the striker and the ferrorod (the striker's surface). If you use ZIPPO brand lighter fluid, you will have good luck with your ignition. It's more volatile than regular lighter fluid and doesn't smell as strongly. In that sense, it's very nice. The only downside is that it can evaporate faster. But ZIPPO liquid is cheap. I recommend these permanent matches. They are amazing. Especially if you do these little things to tweak their functionality.
