If your splint is dirty, badly oxidized, or you haven't done it for several seasons, you will first need to prep it with some kind of deep cleaner or solvent. (I used acetone). You can then apply this material easily and smoothly. Holds up well with regular detergents and I just apply it a couple of times per season without much prep. The rails look like new all year round.
