In the past my regular watch tended to get a lot of wear (never broken, just light scratches), but at $20 a watch I wasn't overly concerned. With my more expensive Apple Watch, I'm afraid of doing something that will break the screen. As a result, I definitely bought a case for him. I love this case because it is VERY easy to install. There was another case that I've used before, but I had to remove the wrist straps to put it on or take it off (in case it needed to dry out if it got wet). This can be easily switched on and off. Water (or even sweat) gets under the lid, so being able to fix it is important. Other pluses: It's relatively thin (less than a quarter, see image) so the watch isn't bulky. That goes very well with the watch. The downside to this is that I broke a few covers (see picture) so each only lasted a few months. This usually happened when I was working in my garage or shed, so my watch was subjected to more force than normal daily activities. However, my watch was found perfectly underneath. Overall, this is good coverage for the price if you don't typically struggle with screens. If your watch is subjected to more force, you might want to keep looking.
