While this microscope is not a $10,000 lab quality instrument, it is more than adequate for students and DIY enthusiasts. The direct substage lighting and backlighting are great. Focus is a little touchy, but once you achieve it, the image is stable and clear. Plugable doesn't mention Linux in its product description, but Microscope works great with ucview, ffplay, mplayer, vlc and maybe more. Attached are some photomicrographs I took with this scope.
