They have to be unscrewed to extend so that side pressure keeps them in place. I pushed them far enough to even out the contents of the fridge and keep them in place when traveling. But every time we arrive and I open the fridge one of them is loose. I think any cheap curtain rod will work as well. I liked them at first because they were sturdy, there were 2 of them and they clipped together so I figured they would support both tall and short items in my fridge.
