Review on Enhanced Footwear Traction with Kahtoola NANOspikes by Kenny Hrdlicka

Painful Metal Design

This is my third winter with these spikes and I'm ready to find an alternative. Studs are great for icy roads and pavements, but once you add 1/4 inch of snow to the mix, they don't help much. Another thing I noticed is that the sidewalks have very uneven ice (think winter mix that freezes after people have stomped on it all day), my feet often slip because the spikes don't catch anything be able. My wife has a brand with coils and doesn't experience the heel slippage that I experience. The deal breaker for me is similar to what others have said: On my right foot, the front metal strap presses hard on my big toe. They are actually a pain when you have running shoes. For that reason alone I would reject it. I've tried everything to change the position of the front toe, and I've always managed to press right on my toe. If you look at the design you will see that they use oval shaped metal clips. This clip doesn't lie flat, it actually sits upright. This piece of metal just digs into your toe and causes nothing but frustration. I tell myself every year that I replace them. This is the year. Farewell, Kahtoola Nanothorns!
