littleBits are great for introducing kids to science and engineering, but kits are not cheap. Most of the basic ones start at $60 and an investment of several hundred dollars is needed to acquire a variety of sensors, parts, and motors for more complex projects. Beyond the monetary cost, however, is the intangible value of opening up your child's mind to exploration and science at an early age.Of course, you could put together something similar with an electronics kit and breadboard for a fraction of the cost, but that's not kid friendly. The genius of littleBits is that children intuitively get it. The pieces click together like Legos, via magnetic attraction. There's no way to connect 2 pieces wrong. The magnetic dots will repel the opposing piece and a circuit will never complete.This Base Inventor kit comes with 2 very fun and useful sensors -- sound trigger and proximity sensor. With these, your child can make a room alarm or other warning system -- either with an LED light, or a buzzer, or both. A slide toggle is included to vary the intensity of the output. My only complaint is that the mounting board is too hard to use and components fall off easily.
