We live in San Francisco and a lot of old houses have stucco and chain link walls. Although we only have about 1200 square feet of living space, to support the entire apartment at reasonable speeds, we need at least 2 WiFi devices on our 1Gbps fiber connection. My goal in purchasing this device was to match the performance of an Orbi system with the capabilities of my Netgear Nighthawk WiFi 6 AX12 (RAX200) router. I really wanted 1 SSID for the whole house but for now my 2 SSIDs should be enough. I need a full featured router like the AX12 because sometimes I host game servers and other times I do port forwarding, static DHCP and custom routes. I am an advanced user. The Orbi products I've installed in other homes have worked great, but they don't have the full functionality I need. The Nighthawk AX8 WiFi 6 Extender allowed me to compress my network down to 1 SSID with the features I wanted, but the signal performance was much poorer than I expected. Often the signal dropped to 50-100 Mbit / s in 1 room + 1 in the corridor. Rarely have I been able to get speeds over 150Mbps unless I was standing next to an expander. The AX8 also didn't support wired Ethernet backhaul, only wireless backhaul. Also, during a wireless backhaul, I noticed my router's performance degraded with other AX devices. I think it was because the AX8 allocated bandwidth between the extender and router, leaving less bandwidth for other devices in the house. I was very disappointed to learn that the AX8 cannot do wired transmission like the Orbi. If you've tried wired transport with the AX8, I think it creates a feedback issue and the AX8 extender doesn't provide any viable throughput for its wireless clients. I've tried contacting Netgear support and the forum, but my post gets published on the site. . I wrote a Medium blog post about my experience as it was my first time feeling quite disappointed with a Netgear product. I have since returned the Revain product and am hoping that Netgear will fix the shortcomings of the AX8 or come up with a new product for this product segment that requires a SINGLE SSID and a fully featured high performance router, preferably with (MultiGig) support. ) wired transport network. I would only recommend this extender to those who are currently getting less than 100Mbps wireless clients, have a lot of devices and can't run a cable between rooms. This product does not work with mesh networks or Orbi products. Use these if you don't need a full-featured router.
