Not as advertised

I've wanted a good quality guillotine paper cutter for a long time. Cutters in stationery stores seemed flimsy and not durable. The description and photos in the advert for this cutter made me think this was what I was looking for. It brings back memories of those who studied many years ago. However, when I received this cutter for $219, I was very disappointed. In many places the description says "solid maple base" and "adds earthy warmth to the workspace". Base - plywood, edges - veneer, see photo. The blade and arm appear to be well made, but there is a significant gap between the blade and the base that requires some adjustment and/or significant left cutting pressure (see photo). There are adjustment screws (which were missing the protective cap pictured in the description) so this can be corrected with an adjustment, but you would think the quality department might have adjusted a little better before issuing a "quality" cutter. I can be particularly critical of the finish and materials of a wood base, but having worked with wood and furniture for years, I appreciate the look and feel of quality wood products, be it furniture, boats or tools. It doesn't look or feel like advertised. It doesn't have such a solid, solid wooden base. I may or may not return this item as there doesn't seem to be a better choice but it is sad that we lowered our expectations to lesser quality and that the company misrepresents products in this way.
