Review on Cable Matters Premium Aluminum USB-C Hard Drive Enclosure - 10Gbps Gen 2, Thunderbolt 4 Compatible, MacBook Pro/Air, USB-C/USB-A Cables by Reed Nuttbrock

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The fastest external SSD enclosure I've ever used (Samsung 860).

I had a $500 Crucial 2TB SSD that could be used as a bootable backup of my MacBook Pro, but that SSD died last week. The Crucial Inatek SSD backs up about 530 GB per hour for a 1.6 TB backup (3 hours). I've had to temporarily switch to partial clone backups with my smaller 1TB Samsung 860 SSD in a similar Inatek case (no iTunes media backup) and saw 600GB per hour using my 16" MacBook Pro ( updated processor, GPU, 32GB / 2TB). So Samsung was a bit faster. Well I bought this Cable Matters case from a 2TB Samsung 860 and the Carbon Copy Cloner just copied 980GB in the first hour! The Black Magic Disk speed test shows 485 writes and 528 reads. , which almost matches the speed of my old 2014 Mackbook Pro 15" internal SSD. I attribute the 70% speed increase over the other Samsung 860 to the Cable Matters case. Also, the space gray color goes perfectly with my 16" Macbook (see photo) I have to say this case is a winner despite being 1mm thicker than my other cases. Also the top and sides are nice aluminum but the removable plastic bottom for internal access is a little disappointing .doesn't feel loose. The 12" cable is solid but could use a little more flexibility as it's too stiff for the case to fit my Macbook snugly (see photo). I could probably fix it with a softer cable , but that might slow it down.

Pros
  • Hard Drive Enclosure
Cons
  • Infinitely Slow
