my 25 year old horse needs a back pad because his back is sagging. This makes a big difference in its performance. The saddler adjusted the flocking, which lifted the rigmarole a bit. I don't need anything under the knob. Unfortunately, this rug did not live up to my expectations and I returned it. It is very sticky and picks up all kinds of dirt, which is almost impossible to avoid in the stable. It doesn't have enough support due to the way the ridges are made. It was pinching my lower back so I moved it back. It worked for some, but my hips started to hurt like the curve was too tight. This disturbed my seat so much that my horse was not happy.
