Good memoir but not as fun as a book

Naked sat on my shelf for at least a year before I decided to read it. I have a bad habit of not reading books after I've bought them, so that shouldn't surprise me. As a memoir, The Nude is an incredibly good collection of autobiographical essays. As you make your way through Naked, you just don't believe in the dysfunctional Sedaris family. Everyone around them claims they have some kind of dysfunctional family, but Sedaris really wins. From the author's childhood of tics and obsessive-compulsive disorder, to his teachers visiting his house when offered alcoholic beverages and his mother impersonating her son. You immediately feel like an author. By far the best part of Naked is Me-Me, the grandmother of Sedaris. I wish I had at least one grandmother like her growing up. If you haven't caught yourself laughing out loud at least once, you don't have a sense of humor :). The authors then tell of longtime hitchhikers in a wide variety of trades and give hope to readers like me who haven't quite figured out who they are and what they want to be in life. On a personal level, these were the stories I enjoyed most about Sedaris. The fact that he made it out of hell and years of uncertainty/wandering to become a successful novelist and playwright is truly inspiring. It just shows you that anything is possible, even if it takes a lot more time in your life to realize it. My dissatisfaction with Naked turns out to be a "divisive" and "hilariously entertaining" memory. The humor started to die for me when Sedaris left for camp for a month. From this point on, the comedy of the novel is significantly reduced. Of course, the novel definitely takes on a darker tone up until the final chapters, but I was expecting it to be funny for more than half of the book. In this regard, the reviews and descriptions of the book disappointed me. Overall, this is definitely worth reading for anyone who wants to be truly fascinated by other people's trials and tribulations and how they overcame them. Just don't expect it to be comedy from start to finish. I wouldn't give 4 stars, more like 3.5 stars. Since Naked has been around for about 14 years, it's certainly a steal for the price. So if you don't like it as much as you thought, it won't make a big dent in your wallet. :) - Travis S
