Review on Brother Designio Series DZ1234 Serger by Hannah Curi

Let me preface this review with these words: I have never used or owned a serger - I have never seen anyone use a serger. So if I can do it, anyone can. I mainly sew clothes and finally after 30 years I decided it was time to start sewing. I'm thrilled with the results! I love this brother Serger very much. I've spent a lot of time reading reviews and browsing Craig's List looking for a great deal on a high priced Bernina or Juki that I couldn't find. So I went with this brother in my price range and couldn't be happier with my choice. I chose the 1234 over the 1034 because I prefer the more sophisticated look of the 1034's dark blue dials. s colored dials - and since this model came with 3 extra feet, it cost me extra. Refilling is easy and each step is clearly marked and colour-coded; They have small numbered pictures in the looper area which makes threading almost certain - the only thing you need a manual for is to put them in the right order. As long as you weave in the correct order you won't have any problems. My final tip on threading: immediately grab the spools of thread that came with the Brother machine and discard them - and thread the machine with quality thread purchased elsewhere. The "free" Topics kept dropping out and making my first 2 hours in the car more frustrating than it needed to be. Save yourself the headache! Once I put a decent thread on the serger, everything has been running smoothly ever since. Another advantage of this machine is that it uses standard sewing machine needles, so you don't have to buy special needles for it; They can replace your regular sewing machine, saving you money. I tested denim, ultralight stretch fabric and swimwear fabric; and I also sewed through 4 layers of fleece with no problem (I made my son a fleece bathrobe/pyjama bottoms for Christmas). Love the differential lining that prevents stretching! With slight adjustments to the stitch width and length and the tension dial, I have successfully sewn flatlock stitches on any fabric, that I have tried so far. I can't get enough of this serger. I haven't tried folding yet. But the flatlock was easy enough. Just leave the manual open when trying something new and everything seems to work exactly as described.
