Review on Sony Full Frame Large Aperture Ultra Wide Angle by Pat Peoples

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Sharp, fast, great focus.

I had my doubts about the price of this lens. For a much lower price I could get a slightly slower lens from other manufacturers, but I decided to bite the bullet and go for better quality. I am very happy with this solution. A fast f1.8 lens is great for me as I often shoot in the dark and low light. The image quality is excellent wide open and definitely sharp enough for the shots I'm taking. FOCUS: This new focus control method is far superior to anything I've tried. Nothing I have can match it in terms of speed, accuracy and volume. Right, volume. This lens is virtually silent, which is a big plus for hybrid photo/video shooters. On top of that, there are the downsides: this lens is physically larger than my other wide-angle lenses (28mm f2.8), but that's due to the amount of high quality fast glass in this lens. To me it's totally worth the weight, but if you're going to be traveling with it and don't need a maximum aperture of f1.8, I'd go with a lightweight compact lens. I was concerned about lens damage when shooting. it is turned off. You can feel the knots moving under their own weight inside the lens. I'm a little worried about a strong impact that might damage the lens. I haven't heard other people report this as an issue, so I guess I'm just worried for no reason. Conclusion: I would buy this lens again at any time. This is by far my favorite wide-angle lens that I've tried.
