Portability combined with affordability

I'm not a professional photographer - in fact I would like to be "amateur". Since I shoot outdoors most of the time, lighting wasn't too much of an issue up until this point. But having quality lighting available when I need it is something I've been thinking about for a while. With the expected birth of our first grandchild and the request to take the baby's first photos, I felt that now is the time to invest as I can't exactly place the baby on a fence post somewhere in bright sunlight . My Requirements: Affordable, Versatile, Portable, this kit ticked all three boxes during my search and initial reviews made me feel optimistic. Everything unpacked and put in to check the performance. Everything worked and I liked the relatively easy assembly. Relative is the keyword, but I'll get to that later. The lighting was very appropriate on some eBay photo shoots. All of this fits neatly into the included storage and carrying case. Here are the cons: the boom was a little clumsy to assemble, and the boom arm just lay loose in the carry case. Everything else has a box to return to. The bar light head differs from the other two in that it only has one bulb, but that's understandable considering it needs to be lighter and permanently attached to the softbox (although this softbox is VERY easy to install). But the switch for this light is right next to the light head. Great when it's down, not great when you've raised it over an object and want to toggle it on and off during the session. However, the other two softboxes themselves are a bit more difficult to assemble. There's a video that makes it look as easy as buttering bread, but I have to wonder how many takes it took them to make it so smooth. Get ready for a little fight. However, once assembled they are quite reliable. Verdict: If you want decent lighting that's affordable and portable, this is a pretty decent option. And while there is certainly better lighting for a permanent studio, this set ticks all the boxes for a small beginner's studio. Once installed they were also fairly stable when moving, with the boom being the only part that wobbled a bit when fully extended. Price - 5 stars. I just wish it didn't take almost an hour to set everything up.
