Good to have if you don't want broken ribs.
My ribs used to break and it wasn't fun, I was treated for literally months. Getting back to mountain biking, I decided I needed some protection. It fits the bill and doesn't get as hot as I expected thanks to the well-placed vents. I recommend this product and now wear it on EVERY trip. I've also posted this on the mountain bike forums when people ask about chest protectors.
