Review on Graph Story by Rodney Harris

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Highly configurable data store for large teams

Easy to implement, fast data manipulation through queries in SQL or GQL (Graph Query Language), powerful analytics engine which can do almost any task under the suns, data stored online instead of relying on local hard drives. The only thing I dislike is their proprietary storage format called B-tree files. It requires you to use either the native client toolbox from Microsoft, it's own open source tools for Linux systems, a Python implementation, etc. You cannot easily connect to an on prem instance without using third party plugins like PyGDSource since they are still working on it internally. If you need your own graph database with flexible schema creation capabilities then this could be a good option if used effectively within your organization or team. For academic research purposes or for small teams who require self hosting solution that will not incur large costs per user at least initially. We wanted our engineering department to have access to a shared centralized store where we can keep our production, test, stage environments, and develop some more customized versions for each project/feature which has its own unique requirements (customized schemas). This allows us to store common artifacts including domain models and configurations easily. As part of the application development life cycle, we also used this system heavily It has a seamless connection with R and other languages such as Python. Very easy to use for data visualization and dashboards. The dashboard creation can be cumbersome sometimes with the number of columns required. If you are looking for an excellent tool for business analytics, data visualization, it is the right database for you. We are using it in our startup firm to track the development of our software. It is a great platform that helps us track the performance of our software.

Pros
  • The graph database and the graph analytics engine is a great tool
Cons
  • The proprietary storage format called B tree files is a dislike
