Teenage daughter asked for a record player. What? Wow, ok, absolutely! Of course it will be more expensive than streaming, but your recordings are tangible. Visiting a music store and flipping through countless albums is hateful, understandably necessary. I wouldn't buy the style suitcase she said her friends at Urban Out bought. So after a few days of research and a nominal budget I settled on a more expensive model from a cheaper brand. This is a pretty solid base. The stylus was decent if not a bit confusing to install (it took a few pounds of force, a slight angle, and a twist to get it right). I also bought her first Queens Greatest Hits album. She also needed speakers, and there's a preamp built in here, that makes it easy. I connected this TT to an Edifier r1290t powered speaker. She lit up when I asked her to put the needle at the beginning of the record. A small crackle, then silence before the music. She thought she'd heard these songs before, but there was noise hidden beneath all the digital encoding, bad DACs, and crappy headphones she'd used for years. Let's go back to TT. It's really solid, very attractive, sounds great for the price, feels like real hi-fi tables and gives the aspiring analogue music lover a glimpse into the history of how music was delivered and discovered by the predecessors. While not hi-fi to most, it packs a punch and will make a kid smile when they're not the envy of their peers with suitcases that sound like a tin can. If you are on a budget, check out the Fluance RT80/81/82, U Turn Orbit, Music Hall 1.3, Crosley C10 (made by Pro-ject) tables and the Pro-Ject tables themselves. Update for 9 months. She has about 25 records, which is kind of weird. Google "100 gecs" table was 100% no problem. She rearranged her room at least 4 times without her father's help, "ie rearranged the table". The only feature I would like is the auto shut off after pressing dead wax for about 30 seconds. Found her dozing with a spinning record for who knows how long. Final word - they are great for their value. It would be nice for those looking for a table in this price range. People will say you can't buy an AT60 instead of a Crosley. Actually for $30 it's a better deal, looks better, isn't plastic, feels better, doesn't ruin vinyl like those cheap red shell cases, sounds good, has an AT cartridge, has hand balance, and proves Crosley should not be classified as a toy genre.
