It's worth it if you know what you're doing with electricity.
5 minutes of searching revealed that replacing the exact ballast for my aquarium lamp costs HALF a new lamp. So instead of buying a new lamp I bought two replacement ballasts. After they arrived I spent 10 minutes replacing the faulty one and my lamp works like new. It's great that I found the right part so quickly. It works great.
