Check appliances and insulation, entertain your cats, and chase ghosts

We love the Extech Mini Infrared Thermometer. You can check the temperature up close or remotely with the built-in laser pointer to aim at the area you want to explore. The thermometer itself makes a robust and versatile impression. (I've dropped it several times with no problems.) We have a large, almost new toaster that had problems from the start because it heated up unevenly. None of us could ever find the best place to store foods β€” from frozen lasagna to muffins β€” so they bake evenly. We used this thermometer to pinpoint the hottest spots and we haven't burned a single cookie since. We've also used it over pots of water on the stovetop to estimate how long it would take for the water to boil and checked a torn spot on our fridge gasket to see if it needs replacing or can wait. and used an infrared thermometer to find out where our air leaks are - it worked like a champ. We also used it to check the check engine light on our water heater after a hurricane - sometimes it burns out. We tested it with this device (instead of laying it flat on the patio's cement slab) and it told us that the pilot was alive and warm, allowing us to shower without fear of shampoo in our hair and no hot water to get caught. instant playtime for our cats. They love chasing red lights. (But be careful - like all lasers, this one shouldn't be pointed at a pet's eyes - it could damage them. For the same reason, I wouldn't let children play with it.) Finally, you can detect cold (or heat) spots and find out if there is a normal source by tracking the temperature to the source. We kept getting a hot spot in our bedroom that just seemed to be hovering under the window, and we were able to use this thermometer to finally figure out it was something in the AC wiring. I also brought a thermometer into a private home that the landlord believes is a "ghost". He has several "cold spots" that occur regularly. When the landlady called me and said that she had a large thermometer active in one of the bedrooms, I grabbed the thermometer and went to her. The thermometer quickly found a cold place - but there was nothing to follow. It just hung in the air, a drop with no visible source. I don't know if that haunts the house, but it was definitely weird and remains inexplicable. I then checked two other areas where she had complained of cold spots and found insulation leaks. This sturdy thermometer is well built and very accurate. Whether you use it to find insulation leaks, appliance problems, auto work, or anything else, it's a good choice. Four stars because it uses a custom battery and when it comes time to replace it I'll fret about it.
