For a true 90 degree crosshair, you must be perpendicular to the dot. The problem is that it throws the thing off balance and tips it over. I recommend gluing a pencil from a model airplane to the opposite side of the scale for balancing. Now I'm happy with it. Out of the box you will be disappointed.
