Review on Microsoft Surface Pro 5 (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) by Tylin Meyer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best for computers and tablets

Great computer for general work. I work on an i7 with 1TB of storage - I bought a Pro 4 with i5 and 256GB and quickly realized I didn't buy enough for my work. Good (good, great): Fast - The Surface Pro i7 is significantly faster than the 2015 i5. Possibly 2-2.5x faster on standard missions. I'm doing some media jobs for comparison this weekend and will be posting a sequel. Storage - very fast. Files open and close with a "click". The screen is just as good as the Pro 4 and that's what made me switch from the MacBook Air to the Pro line. The screen is beautiful. Reading fingerprints on the touch keyboard (recommended option) is much faster and more accurate. This tells me that fingerprint recognition accuracy requires CPU processing as I just upgraded the same keyboard from a Pro 4 to a Pro 2017. Surface Dock – A truly outstanding accessory. Just plug in the magnetic connector and add monitor, ethernet, audio and other USB-3 to your work. I use it with a very high resolution Dell display and it's amazing. Mixed. Battery - it lasts significantly longer than the Pro 4 with the same brightness - but I still get around 5-7 hours of usage. This is the case with "recommended" or "brighter" settings. I don't use the brightest ones - it's just a waste. Battery life could be better, but it's good enough for my needs. USB-C wish list. I certainly wasn't expecting this, but Microsoft could have upgraded USB 3.0 to the latest specification and added USB-C to the Pro 2017. It's actually not that bad (no star deduction), but seriously, why not? In general, this is more than a solid performance. It's a stylish, beautiful, standout performer that suits any traveler and any desk. It's a great sequel to the already great Pro 4.
