Fantastic start to macro photography that won't break the bank

I decided I wanted to try macro photography. First I tried the option where you take a cheap kit lens and remove the front element, but the working distance was too short (less than half an inch in my experiment) so I looked for other options. Extension tubes seemed like the next best (cheapest) option. As others have noted these tubes are Meike branded but the box is Mcoplus branded. Apart from the brand name, they look exactly like the pictures. Fit and finish are very good, especially for the price; They're a little tight, but I'd rather have a tight fit than something really loose. When I received the tubes I tried a few different combinations; I like a 16mm tube with my Lumix 12-60 lens. My working distance is probably around three inches, so I still need to get close (not always easy with a regular sized tripod!), but it's certainly better than the cheap kit lens trick. I maneuver my tripod and camera until I'm within approximate range, then use a combination zoom and focus ring to get the focus right. The autofocus is dodgy, but I focused manually most of the time, so it wasn't an issue. Most of these shots were taken in manual mode on a tripod at f/8 (and at any shutter speed, so I had a low ISO) with a two-second delay to reduce vibration; Focus peaking is your friend. There is clearly a strong magnification there; the third shot is moss and the second shot is a pine cone. There's some weird distortion/stretching around the edges of some shots, but the mid/mid range is sharp so it doesn't bother me too much. A bit of weather protection would have been nice (the tube(s) were sandwiched between the weatherproof lens and the body), but we can't expect miracles, especially at this price point. Highly recommended if you want to get into macro photography on a budget.
