I REALLY wanted them to work. Brief background: I had an LG headset that lasted 4 years. People never complained about how I sounded or that they couldn't hear me - I always heard them - and the music sounded good. Last summer, a friend of mine wanted to ditch the traditional wired headset that came with his iPhone. He asked my opinion, so I told him I was very happy with my LG (neckband version with retractable earcups). I ended up buying the latest generation LG version - it was terrible. I could never hear him clearly. Ironically, my LG died a few months ago. Convinced of their poor performance, I decided to carefully consider my options. I learned a lot about true wireless headphones - good and bad - and really focused my experience on what matters most to me. I need a headset that not only sounds good to me, but also to the person I am talking to. In sales I am constantly on the phone and it is important that communication is good for both parties. I saw some videos from Poly about the Back Beat 5100 and was very intrigued. In their ads, they discussed the benefits of noise cancellation on the microphone. I went online to read people's reviews but there weren't many for the Back Beat 5100. More important to me than the words in the review was finding a reviewer who provided an actual audio recording to demonstrate what someone on the other end of the phone in a real scenario. There were video reviews showing Air Pod Pro, Jabra 75 Elite, Sony etc. but none of them were about the Back Beat 5100. In desperate need of a headset again I pulled the trigger on the BB5100. Black Friday (week) and I saved a few bucks. They arrived today and I was delighted. Read the quick start guide, download the app and get started. I was really looking forward to trying out and putting 4 mics to the test, not so much to prove or disprove their worth, but to see how far I can take them in real life before the sound for the user is affected. . at the other end of the wire. Unfortunately I didn't get that far. It took about an hour to connect the headphones to my iPhone 11 Pro Max. After plugging them in, I was able to listen to music and liked the sound. Passive noise cancellation was good as I had a good in-ear earphone seal. The bass was plentiful but not overwhelming (at least on the two songs I listened to). This is where it gets more frustrating. The app advised me to update the firmware (was version R13, latest version R15) to unlock all phone features. Now that the pairing is complete, it should be easy enough; Correctly? Not correct. I clicked on the app to update my headphones. The headphones lay next to the phone and were fully charged. The app signaled that the update had started and might take 20 minutes, but after a minute or two the earbuds disconnect from the phone and the update fails. An error message appeared that the connection to one of the earbuds failed, which is why the update was canceled. The "Percent Complete" counter never left 0%. Tried 3-4 times then uninstalled the app. tried again failure after failure. Tried to contact live chat support. He told me to repeat everything I just did. While I was about to pop these buds into the blender, I made one last try via chat support; Fail. I decided to return them to Revain for a refund instead of an exchange. Pairing/updating/using shouldn't be that difficult. I don't have the patience to see if another BB5100 will solve my problems, not when I know there are other manufacturers out there. Versions that people have already reviewed and based on which I know the performance is right where I need it. Getting another BB5100 would be a science experiment - will replacing the BB5100 fix the pairing/upgrading issues I had with that first device? If so, will it work as I hoped? If they weren't given to me, I shouldn't waste my time and nerves going over this all over again just for "maybe". Since the sound quality of the microphones is most important to me, I was REALLY impressed with Apple. Benefits of AirPods If your needs match mine, be sure to go online and look for video reviews that have real audio. Very impressive. Hope this helps at least one other person.
