Review on Scythe Shuriken Profile 120Mm Cooler by Kevin Singleton

Revainrating 5 out of 5

With the fan replaced, this is the king of SFF!

This item is great for small Itx builds. However, it can get a bit noisy. After installing the sfx power supply in the Silverstone sg13 case I had an extra 20mm gap compared to the 62mm I had when I had the ATX power supply there. So I have enough room for this cooler plus a regular 25mm fan instead of the 15mm fan that came with this cooler. I put a noctua ippc 120mm high static industrial fan on it and lowered the load temperature by 5C. The Ryzen 1600, which is slightly understated by 0.0325, runs at a cool 63 degrees under load. Even my VRM temps have dropped by 4-6C. The Noctua fan runs at a maximum speed of 2000 rpm, but I never need more than 1600, so it cools and reduces noise. The upside was that the slanted fan was the perfect size to fit snugly between the top frame and the power supply on the right side of the exhaust housing. I run it at 45-65 percent to keep the noise down and also to balance the 120mm 3-pin Cougar fan I have for the front intake. Since it's a 3-pin header and I had to use the AIO pump fan connector on my motherboard, this fan runs at 100 percent constantly, 1700 RPM, and is the noisiest fan in the case. Over time I will be switching it to 140mm Noctua Chromax in the future. My budget mini gaming rig consists of: Ryzen 1600Asus strix b450i1tb Critical P1 qlc nvme sadRX 580 8GB Sapphire PulseSeasonic Focus SGX-650 psuEvga 3000Hz 15-15-15-35 16GB (2x8) RAM 120mm Cougar 3-pin Cougar fan set for a cooler in an exhaust of the housing. Magnetic dust filters (very porous body). I wouldn't hesitate to buy this beefy, low profile gem again. While it does a great job with the stock fan, it's no problem if you have room for a thicker fan. Update: Fan replaced again with Noctua nf-a12 (new version) based on youtube profile air cooler disassembly. Also, the scype fan has been replaced with a noctua nf-a12 120mm x 15mm fan. It's now a few degrees cooler and much, much quieter. I can't say enough about the BS3 finstack. Just great.

Pros
  • Great Design
Cons
  • Crumpled Packaging
