I've been using one of these (this particular model) for a few months and then switched back to powder detergent (Charlie's soap, unscented). I have no way of knowing if this works or not, but reading the Wikipedia article on the claims made by "washball" sellers convinces me I've been taken on a $10 trip. The article states that detergent balls do not make clothes any cleaner than washing them in plain water. In the worst case, the ball can break, the ceramic balls will scatter and cause a mechanical breakdown in the washing machine. The US Federal Trade Commission has taken action against some vendors for making false claims. Consumer organizations in other countries advise against buying. Just google "balls wash" and read before you decide that all those 5 star reviews are plausible.
