I started collecting coins. I found I needed something easy to use so I could see mint marks and other small details on coins. I have a more expensive magnifying glass with visible and ultraviolet LEDs - it's a marvel, but it usually just sits in a drawer. This sturdy little 20x jeweler's loupe isn't illuminated, but it sits on my desk because I use it all the time. With one hand I hold the large (black) end of the magnifying glass close to my eye. My other hand brings the coin close to the small (red) end of the magnifying glass until the image is sharp. A bright table lamp also helps a lot.
