Poor float design, best suited for submersible pumps

I have 5 other pumps in my possession but I use 2 other brands besides this one. I had to return this one because the float only worked when raised above the pump, which meant the water had to be a foot deep before the pump would turn on. The float mechanism is very different from other Wayne and LilGiant pumps. This is a big float with a load in it. Looks a bit primitive.
