I just replaced the pump on my Nissan Quest '96 and the one that failed was a Gates which was replaced by the car's previous owner at a New York garage. It failed after only 30-35 thousand km. Before replacing the timing belt, 35 thousand remained. Took me about 5-6 hours to replace the pump (first time on this machine), I wasn't in a hurry. Pretty impractical, limited space to work in the engine compartment. If you do this yourself please ensure you have the car on stands. I would say that a good set of tools is needed to complete the job and I would rate it a 5-6/10 for complexity, instruction and mechanism handling skills are also required. If you are a beginner, don't do this. I got a new pump from AdvanceAuto Parts for about $30 so I wouldn't be surprised if it failed in 30-40k miles but hopefully not in the next 10-15k. At least it's backed by a lifetime guarantee from AdvanceAuto and I didn't have to wait for delivery.
