Not sure what type of wood it is made of but it is very light and feels brittle. It is attached to the wall with just two screws at the very top of the side braces. - In my case, the shelf doesn't fit the wall exactly, the bottom sticks out about 1/4 inch. - I can't understate how fragile this thing feels. I'm afraid to use all the hooks as it might fall apart. - Speaking of hooks, using pre-drilled holes leaves most hooks a bit askew. - The top shelf is very, very narrow. Sizes are listed, so it's probably my fault for not getting out my ruler and noticing how little 4.5 inches of room is for things like gloves and hats. There is a "hem" around the top to keep things from sliding down, but there isn't one. It's just a flat shelf. For the price you can find something much better on other craft sites.
