Okay, it took me a few times to program it. The instructions provided are the same as in the vehicle owner's manual (Forester 2005). They didn't work for me. YouTube had other methods that didn't work either. What worked was the instruction of Peter Vandermeij published in his review of 01/02/2021. Many instructions also state that the car horn will beep or chirp to indicate when the car is in programming mode. This didn't happen to me, instead the machine gave a continuous beep that didn't turn off while programming. It wasn't very loud so be aware that noises can vary. The remote itself seems very similar to the original and now that it's programmed it works great. I'm very happy to replace the original that didn't work properly with this one that works.
