In today's technological world it seems like every toy needs batteries or a charger. How nice to find something as simple as a rubber band loom that can keep my kids entertained! I bought a Rainbow loom as a Christmas present for my 7 year old daughter in early October. We seemed to see cute rubber bracelets everywhere and I had a hard time not giving them to her early on. All she could talk about was that she needed the Rainbow Loom. It was first on her Christmas list and it was the only thing she asked Santa for when she finally saw him in person. As a critic that I am, I mistakenly assumed that this was one of those toys that will give you an hour of pleasure and then be forgotten forever. I was rather wrong. Three weeks after Christmas it is still played every day. In fact, yesterday I ordered more rubber bands. This is a high quality loom made from thick plastic that doesn't feel fragile at all. It came with a loom, a crochet hook which is actually a mini loom, instructions and a pack of colorful elastics, both opaque and gel-like. At the base of the loom is a blue plastic that actually detaches and is used to connect multiple looms together. We've had no issues with snapping rubber bands and the included "C-clips" hold up exceptionally well. I bought some elastics from a reputable women's clothing/accessories store and, although the elastics were fine, the clips are oval, don't hold up well and the bracelets fall apart easily. Recommended for ages 8+, my 7 year old has absolutely no problem making bracelets. The Rainbow Loom website has a How To tab that lists several designs by skill level (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) as well as how-to videos. I made several models myself and I really liked it. This is a great way to switch off for 20 minutes and unwind after work. While a single loom can produce multiple patterns, it is not big enough for wider bangles, which need to be extended with a single loop chain to form a complete bangle. For this reason I am planning to buy a second loom. I would highly recommend this rainbow loom to both boys and girls. Even if you have a child who has never been interested in it, I think it will be a big hit. In fact, I would pay double for the entertainment value alone.
