I use them by tucking them inside the mask for extra protection from filtration. I like the shape and size of these filters (wider than flat filter cartridges). If you have a regular flat sheet mask, it doesn't keep the material out of your nose or mouth. BUT if you have a mask where the nose and mouth "stick out" they are perfect. The entire order comes in one package, but when you open it you will find separate packages, each with 5 filters. I love this because I can only take a 5-pack to carry around in my work bag or purse (I also always carry an extra clean mask because you never know what might happen).
