Review on ๐Ÿฆˆ Shark Fin AM FM Amplified Antenna for Marine Car Truck Offroad Stereo Radio 12V by Charles Butler

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Must be installed on a flat surface and not on a "raised " roof contour.

I used this with a new aftermarket radio on my 2006 Toyota Sienna. The factory used reinforced rear window antennas, one side for AM and the other side for FM, and two separate antenna connections to the factory radio. The windowed AM antenna used the factory radio circuitry and did not work with the new radio. My goal was to use the shark fin antenna to restore my AM reception. With a little caution, I made a test setup on a grounded luggage rail. I was impressed with the FM reception. I compared it with the original factory antenna, B. by swapping the old and new antenna on a weak FM station. The shark fin was better than my factory VHF antenna. I was disappointed with the AM reception as the stations that were clear and strong on the factory radio were now weak and loud. I explained this by mounting the antenna on the trunk. I gritted my teeth, took the headliner apart and drilled a hole in the center of the roof. I wanted the new antenna to look centered, so I installed it in the middle of one of the stamped outlines on the roof. I didn't foresee any problems until I tried tightening the nut in the car. A special nut/washer prevented the nut from reaching the antenna threads. I removed part of the washer/clamp and only attached with a nut with a 5/8" star washer to ensure proper grounding. It was quite difficult to route the antenna cable to the radio, I avoided all the curtain side airbags but I did it eventually. I checked the FM reception again by disconnecting and reconnecting the 12v antenna cable to make sure the amplifier was working. Now for one last test to make sure the correct installation fixed the AM reception issue. Unfortunately it isn't. Poor AM reception is same as this buyer according to another buyer. I don't think the little shark fin antenna has enough room inside, to emulate the length of a rod antenna or to duplicate a special amplified factory quarter window antenna with additional circuitry in a factory radio to boost the AM signal. Since my FM signal has increased with Shark Fin I will leave it tuned and have to live with poor AM reception until I find a way to pair a new one.
